The VMMC programme, started in 2009 as an add-on HIV prevention strategy for HIV by MoHw and supported by PEPFAR and ACHAP, has not been successful among the general population largely due to weak demand creation and access. As part of the Youth and Adolescents ACHAP is currently implementing a three year Global Fund project to support the scale-up of National VMMC services among HIV negative adolescent/adult men in Botswana in the 7 Global Fund VMMC focused districts of Francistown, Letlhakeng, Hukuntsi, Palapye, Serowe, Boteti and Tutume. The overall goal is to support the Government of Botswana in the national expansion of adolescent/adult VMMC through service provision. The intervention seeks to create demand and mobilize communities for VMMC services in the targeted areas.
ACHAP engages men through encouraging and advocating for community leadership for support and advocacy for VMMC, conducting interpersonal communication sessions and community dialogue with village leadership; men groups; women groups, targeted school campaigns as well as in partnerships with the Community facilitators and volunteers by way of referral.
