Social Asset Building & Youth Economic Empowerment

Social Asset Building

ACHAP Youth program also provides social asset-building training for the youth, aimed at empowering youth to change their lives through personal philosophy to adopt and sustain positive behavior.

By unlocking the mind-set; the training points the youth to multiple possibilities in life and encourages the youth to think outside the box in all areas of their lives. However, with HIV/AIDS being top of the list of the threats facing the youth, the training aims to put power back in the hands of the youth in the fight against HIV and other challenges so that prevention should be from a personal point of view.

We experienced notable change in the youth reached with this program as they started income generating activities and small businesses mostly in the out of school youth target group, some going back to school while the in-school youth developed academic excellence. In their pursuant of their dreams, youth took to the uptake of health services such as HIV testing, VMMC and Correct and Consistent Condom use indicating a change in behaviour and determination to ensure nothing including HIV, social ills become hindrances.

The training uses a quadrant circular model that takes a youth through four stages of perception change. That is;

  • Change their perception on their own capabilities- This is through a SWOT analysis to assess their current state, the resources at their disposal to effect change in their own lives.
  • Change their perception from fixed mind-set to their ability to grow and plan on making the needed change and adjustments for growth, through their strengths and opportunities; skills, abilities, talents.
  • Change their perception on their identity, adopt and live to a positive identity as well as doing all that is necessary to the achievement of their goals.
  • Change their perception on their own personal power, to see themselves as able to influence positive change and lead.
  • The empowered youth then pursues empowerment of others through peer education, volunteering in community projects or any involvement in the community as they may see necessary.
